I fit and built this Swing Science test utility iron to see how the design worked and also to check the viability of the new Aerotech hls Steelfiber/graphite shafts that recently came into the market. I used a new Swing Science FC-One Utility Iron #4 head of 247.7 grams at 24* loft and adjusted the head easily to 58* lie angle which matches a True Length Technology Series #6 specifications. I used an Aerotech hls 780 F2 flex or considered an A flex for my senior swing. I tipped normally 1″ but could have soft stepped it and gotten possibly better results but happy with how the shaft plays. I used a Swing Science Tour Velvet grip of 51.2 grams.. Heft match was 2689 kg-cm^2 (toe down) or D3.5 on swing weight.
The results were a more iron like appearance at address with the forgiveness of most hybrids. The Aerotech hls hybrid shaft with a .370 parallel tip diameter and at 3.1* of torque kept the ball from ballooning and noticeably lower than a typical Wishon Golf S2S Hybrid shafts .335 parallel tip diameter that Tom Wishon designs for higher flight. This will appeal to some players that are looking to lower their ball flight. The “feel” or sound of the ball making impact on the maraging face was muted and not harsh but not the hot feeling you get from some utility iron or hybrid heads. Some of this maybe the shaft. On a par 5 with a well struck shot going into the breeze, the ball started on line and drew about 5 feet towards the pin and fell hole high. The Aerotech hls hybrid shaft definitely has a more tour like piercing trajectory. This Swing Science design by Jeff Sheets is a good one and could be added to any client of FGCC who prefers a utility iron and would choose Swing Science. Cost is in line with other brands with the Aerotech shafts a bit higher cost because of quality.
Swing Science has these FC-One Utility Irons available in #3 in 21*, #4 in 24* and #5 in 27*. The FC-One Utility Iron can be fitted and built with both steel and graphite shafts with a .370 parallel shaft. Swing Science FC-One Utility Iron
